In order to detect organisms such as parasites and fungi that can cause digestive diseases or imbalances, we carry out stool tests on birds (coprological examinations).
Normally these analyses are usually carried out when the animal presents a picture of diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, however, a routine coprological analysis of healthy specimens can give us an early diagnosis, and thus prevent the disease from spreading in the aviary, gaining special importance before the breeding season or when including new birds during their quarantine period.
Avian coccidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria and Isospora. It is a disease that affects the world and causes enormous losses in the sector, due to a decrease in production caused by the delay in the growth of birds and their high mortality. Such consequences are produced by the destruction of the intestinal epithelial villi that cause a malabsorption syndrome that prevents the effective assimilation of the nutrients that the bird needs.

The commonly called megabacteria are, in fact, an ascomycete fungus Macrorhabdus ornithogaster that can be present in the digestive tract of numerous birds on a regular basis, however, sometimes, it can colonize the bird’s digestive system and cause a wide range of digestive problems, such as weight loss (due to malabsorption of nutrients), diarrhea, swollen belly (due to inflammation of the proventriculus) and finally the death of the animal. These symptoms can be confused with those produced by other diseases, such as PDD, hence the importance of performing a differential diagnosis to choose the appropriate treatment.
